Bible Study - Genesis

Hi Everyone!

We will be starting off with our Bible Study soon and the first book that we will be looking at is Genesis. This is the Book that tells us the beginning of all things. We will be giving out free notes as well. More information will be given out in the days to come. God bless us all!

A God Who Helps The Helpless

MANY of us in the Philippines, especially in Cebu, grew up with this line "Lihok tao kai tabangan tika", which is the Cebuano equivalent for "God helps those who help themselves". Not knowing where it really came from, we freely allowed it to seep into our lives.

But the Bible teaches the opposite. Isaiah 25:4 tells us "For You have been a strength (defense) to the poor (helpless), A strength to the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, A shade from the heat; For the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."

And in another portion in Romans 5:6, the Bible tells us this "For when we were still without strength (or helpless), in due time Christ died for the ungodly".

So wherein lies this idea that God helps only those who help themselves? This is definitely an erroneous teaching.In fact, this line is most often attributed to Ben Franklin who was not even a believer. See how corrupted ideas of some men have crept into our lives just because we do not know the Bible?

Friends, the Lord Jesus is our good Shepherd and as our Shepherd, He delights in helping us. He does not close His eyes toward our helplessness. He is our very present help in time of need (Psalm 46:1).

Ask us!

WE always ask questions. As human beings, we always do. Many a times, the trials that we are going through bubble out some questions like "why do we have to suffer?" or "where is God in all this mess?". If you are sick, you may be asking "why am I still sick if God is good"? Or even the question, "Is there really a God?".

Needless to say, nobody here on earth has got all the answers to all the questions. However, God left us One Item that has answers. The sad thing is that we tend to seek answers in all the wrong places.

The Bible is the written word of God and is breathed by God. We believe that all questions pertaining to our life here on earth can be found in the words written on the Bible's pages.

What A Blessed Man Is Like

Jeremiah 17:7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

"Abba" Father!

IN the Old Covenant, God was known by many Names. These Names reveal a certain power or attribute of God, as experienced by the Old Testament saints. Whenever they encountered God in a special way, that experience usually births a new Name or Title of Him. Same God, but many Names. But, when Jesus Christ came, He gave us a new Name by which we can call Him and it's not a complicated one. It is a Name that all of us are surely familiar with. It is a Name that denotes intimacy and family closeness. It's a Name that Jesus Himself used across all the Gospels. And it is through that Name that Jesus prayed for protection for His people. It is The Name "Father".

Human Authors Of The Bible

One of the key steps in understanding the Bible is knowing its two parts- the Old and the New Testament. The Old Testament is composed of 39 books while the New Testament has 27. All the books were written by approximately 40 different human authors with diverse background, but all inspired and breathed by One Holy Spirit. These men were nothing more than just vessels of the Holy Spirit.

Below is the list of the human writers whom the Holy Spirit used as secretaries in writing the Bible.

Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy = Moses - 1400 B.C.

Joshua = Joshua - 1350 B.C.

Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel = Samuel/Nathan/Gad - 1000 - 900 B.C.

1 Kings, 2 Kings = Jeremiah - 600 B.C.

1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah =Ezra - 450 B.C.

Esther = Mordecai - 400 B.C.

Job = Moses - 1400 B.C.

Psalms = several different authors, mostly David -1000 - 400B.C.

Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon = Solomon - 900 B.C.

Isaiah = Isaiah - 700 B.C.

Jeremiah, Lamentations = Jeremiah - 600 B.C.

Ezekiel = Ezekiel - 550 B.C.

Daniel = Daniel - 550 B.C.

Hosea = Hosea - 750 B.C.

Joel = Joel - 850 B.C.

Amos = Amos - 750 B.C.

Obadiah = Obadiah - 600 B.C.

Jonah = Jonah - 700 B.C.

Micah = Micah - 700 B.C.

Nahum = Nahum - 650 B.C.

Habakkuk = Habakkuk - 600 B.C.

Zephaniah = Zephaniah - 650 B.C.

Haggai = Haggai - 520 B.C.

Zechariah = Zechariah - 500 B.C.

Malachi = Malachi - 430 B.C.

Matthew = Matthew - A.D. 55

Mark = John Mark - A.D. 50

Luke = Luke - A.D. 60

John = John - A.D. 90

Acts = Luke - A.D. 65

Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon = Paul - A.D. 50-70

Hebrews = unknown, mostly likely Paul, Luke, Barnabas, or Apollos - A.D. 65 

James = James - A.D. 45

1 Peter, 2 Peter = Peter - A.D. 60

1 John, 2 John, 3 John = John - A.D. 90

Jude = Jude - A.D. 60

Revelation = John - A.D. 90
