A God Who Helps The Helpless

MANY of us in the Philippines, especially in Cebu, grew up with this line "Lihok tao kai tabangan tika", which is the Cebuano equivalent for "God helps those who help themselves". Not knowing where it really came from, we freely allowed it to seep into our lives.

But the Bible teaches the opposite. Isaiah 25:4 tells us "For You have been a strength (defense) to the poor (helpless), A strength to the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, A shade from the heat; For the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."

And in another portion in Romans 5:6, the Bible tells us this "For when we were still without strength (or helpless), in due time Christ died for the ungodly".

So wherein lies this idea that God helps only those who help themselves? This is definitely an erroneous teaching. In fact, this line is most often attributed to Ben Franklin who was not even a believer. See how corrupted ideas of some men have crept into our lives just because we do not know the Bible?

Friends, the Lord Jesus is our good Shepherd and as our Shepherd, He delights in helping us. He does not close His eyes toward our helplessness. He is our very present help in time of need (Psalm 46:1).
